Why Your Leased Line Speed Test May Show Lower Results

If your leased line speed test is showing lower than expected speeds, it doesn’t always mean there’s a fault with your service. Here are the most common reasons:

Office Users

There may be other users inside the office who are using the same connection that you are using, same time same connection, which is hogging the bandwidth. Video conferencing streams, VoIP telephony calls, or back up related traffic may have been given much higher priority over the entire internet access than you are currently getting in testing your internet connection speed.

Network Interface Card

Your computer’s network interface card may be too slow to enable you to test your connection accurately and effectively. 100Mbit/s is a common speed for these cards. If you are testing a leased line with 200Mbit/s with the use of a computer with a 100Mbit/s network interface card, you will only get an output of about 100Mbit/s. In order to test speed higher than that, you’ll need a modern interface card, one that can transmit data at 1Gbit/s.

Firewall

The firewall may be causing the issue so simply connect a laptop directly into the router provided. Do a speed test now to get a more accurate reading.

LAN Traffic

Traffic on the LAN (Local Area Network) may be decreasing the output between your computer and the router supplied by a leased line provider which could create sluggish speed. The best way to avoid this is try doing testing out of hours when you know nobody within your organisation is using the line.

Home / Remote Workers

If your company is allowing employees to be able to connect to your office network from their home, you should consider that some may be using the internet connection at the time that you are conducting the speed testing of your Leased Line. They may be downloading files and if so, they are using reasonable bandwidth on the LAN, even if you can’t actually see them inside the office.

Wireless

Maybe you have connected wirelessly instead of connecting via an Ethernet cable. If so, get your Ethernet cable then re run your test via a wired connection. The will definitely be a noticeable difference using this option as bandwidth will be lost on a wireless connection. The main reason for this is simple. With wireless connections, there are too many other devices on the same frequency in this day and age which will cause inaccuracy if testing using this method.

Upgrade

If the bandwidth has been upgraded, it is highly possible that the ISP might have neglected or forgotten to adjust the throttling on your connection.

Congestion

The provider of the leased line might have sold too much internet transit or bandwidth, resulting in network congestion. Contact them immediately as this should never happen with a leased line. A leased line is a totally private uncontended line where there is zero contention unlike broadband services.
