Point To Point
What Is Point To Point Ethernet And Who Is It Best For? Find Out More Information Below.
What is Point to Point Ethernet?
A point to point Ethernet circuit simply allows you to connect two sites together over a secure, dedicated line. This allows you to extend your business network (WAN) across two locations with a secure, fast and reliable data transfer.
One of the decisions you will make about your Point to Point Ethernet solution is the amount of bandwidth you want, this can range from 100Mpbs to 10Gbps, depending on what you need.
Because you are not sharing your line with other users (it has a 1:1 contention ratio) you get guaranteed speed both up and down stream, reduced buffering and lag in video conferencing and VoIP technologies.
Point to Point Ethernet Advantages
Point to point ethernet circuits have very flexible and very high speed options to suit all. Starting at 10Mb between two locations going as far up as 100Gb with some carriers!
10Mb is getting very rare now as the demand for more bandwidth continues to grow. A 100Mb is the standard as the market stands. However this will no doubt change.
The point to point circuits are perfect for businesses who want to connect 2 sites together located within 25km of each other. However, if you need to connect your sites which are over a bigger distance then this is not a problem.
We have another product for that which is a national ethernet point to point connection. This product can cover much greater distances.

Point to Point Ethernet Disadvantages
Costs are always going to be a factor and ethernet point to point connections are no different. If they are within a 25km distance then we can get some great pricing for you.
However, costs can spiral if one site is in the North of the country and the other is in the South. If these areas (regardless of distance) are built up areas then the likelihood of the pricing being high reduce significantly.
Internet access is also not an option here. this is purely a connection for 2 sites to upload and download data between each other. There is also no management of the line so no routers and presented as wires only.
Speed options are very resticted so you have 10Mb, 100Mb, 1Gb, 10Gb and in extreme circumstances we can get access to 100Gb if needed but please ask for further details.
How Much Does Ethernet Point to Point Cost?
Unlike a standard ethernet service which is purely based on one location, point to point services rely on the availability of two locations. This in turn makes costing a bit more complex.
However, the best guide available is to simply look at your current locations, are they in urban or rural areas? If they are urban then the pricing will reflect this regardless of distance and the chances of a simple, cost effective solution here are high.
If your sites are in very rural locations with not much other businesses around them, it may be more of a struggle. There may be excess charges or you may be lucky. The best way to find out as always is to get a site survey done.
2Connect benefit from having a price promise guarantee so regardless of the outcome – good or bad from the survey, you’ll have peace of mind that you got the best price at the time of order.
