MPLS Leased Line – The guide

Everything You Need to Know About MPLS Leased Line

An MPLS Leased Line is a reliable leased line that is using an excellent technology known as “Multi Protocol Label Switching”.

The good thing about MPLS is that it enables the splitting of traffic into numerous classes of services, which in turn are treated and considered differently as they are travelling across a WAN (Wide Area Network). With this, time sensitive traffic like VoIP calls can actually be prioritized over less time sensitive traffic like the standard web traffic.

For major websites, you can definitely get numerous MPLS lines and you can also configure which network will use an MPLS Fast ReRoute. If a leased line goes down, your data will essentially be rerouted to an alternative path automatically and quickly.

As leased lines with higher bandwidth become cheaper, companies have potentially moved towards effective and converged solutions – where phone calls, internet access, and VPN traffic easily share one connection. While this solution is highly cost effective, it is essential for you to know that it is much better to have an excellent connection rather than high bandwidth. Delay or latency, data loss or packet loss, and variation in delay or jitter also matter. And they can impact some kinds of traffic as compared to others. MPLS ensures that traffic will be treated appropriately in order to minimize every effect of latency, packet loss, and jitter.

In a perfect sense, traffic will suffer little from delay, almost zero jitter, and absolutely no packets will be lost. In reality, however, these are not always possible and practical. Sometimes, one of the branch offices cannot get enough bandwidth, since it is situated in a place with poor connection. To be precise, that branch office cannot get enough bandwidth at a sensible price.

You can also configure MPLS in order to ensure all essential traffic will never suffer unnecessarily. If there’s network congestion, time sensitive traffic must take first priority over the delay tolerant traffic. And you can prioritize important traffic over those less important ones.

MPLS also ensures time sensitive traffic gets appropriate treatment over the others. So are traditional approaches. However, traditional approaches tend to be wasteful. For instance, a company might use 2Mbit/s connectivity for VoIP calls only. This actually delivers a high quality service, but has a possible disadvantage of bandwidth waste, especially if there are only a few calls. MPLS, however, frees this kind of bandwidth, so all voice calls are prioritized and will be used whenever necessary – other traffic can also use it if a few phone calls are made. By using your bandwidth effectively, the MPLS will improve user experience without the need for you to purchase higher bandwidth internet connections.

More and more companies are using VoIP in order to benefit from it. Companies can definitely cut costs and save money from ditching those costly ISDN30 circuits. This has fuelled the demand for less latency, less jitter, less packet loss internet connections, which is being provided by excellent and reliable MPLS leased lines. Why wait? Opt for MPLS Leased lines and see the difference!
