The Increasing Popularity Of MPLS

The Increasing Popularity Of MPLS

Multi-protocol label switching or MPLS is a high performance mechanism in telecommunication networks. This mechanism can direct data from 1 network to the other through short path labels instead of long network addresses, which helps prevent complex lookups in routing tables. These labels can identify the paths or the virtual links between the distant nodes instead of endpoints. MPLS can send a pack of different network protocols in a single path. Also, this mechanism supports a wide range of technologies including Frame Relay, ATM, T1/E1, and DSL.

According to recent research conducted by In-Stat, MPLS is becoming highly popular. What is the increasing popularity of MPLS down to? Based on survey results, businesses are spending more money for the technology, and the expenditure of businesses to this technology is expected to reach $2.4 billion in 2015. The survey results also stated the businesses spending for Software-as-a-Service is expected to reach $800 billion by 2015, and wireless data spending could increase by 45% in 2015. These predictions are based on the increasing number of businesses and companies looking for the best long term investments of their IT networks.

MPLS covers WAN data transport services like dedicated cables, DSL, ATM, Ethernet services, frame relay, and network-based IP VPN. This is a vital area of wirelan data services covering these telecommunication services. This is a high-performance network in telecommunications that enables users to send a packet of data from a particular network node to other labels, which creates virtual links between two distant nodes. Based on survey results, expenditure has been seen in MPLS system design, overtaking other WAN data services.

According to an analyst at In-Sat, Greg Potter, the increase in MPLS expenditure has brought a negative impact to other WAN data transport services. This technology was designed to carry a unified-data transport service for both packet-switching clients and circuit based clients. Frame relay and ATM are a few of the data transport services that have been deployed with similar goals, but MPLS transport data is fast compared to these technologies. Based on study results, the spending of businesses on cable data services will increase up to 34% in the next few years.

MPLS and IP

MPLS works with IP and routing protocols like the IGP or the Interior Gateway Protocol. This high performance telecommunication network mechanism provides transparent, virtual networks the ability to transport layer-3 VPN’s, support for layer-2 pseudo wires, and support for traffic engineering.

In an IP network, the path where the data should be transported is chosen even if that path has been congested. However, in an IP network with MPLS, the shortest path with bandwidth available will be used to transport data. MPLS makes use of TE extensions to Intermediate System to Intermediate System and Open Shortest Path First.

MPLS operation is not possible without the label switch router, label edge router, provider router, and label distribution protocol. Without these things, the MPLS network is not capable of transporting a packet of data from one to other distant nodes.

According to the survey, these things are the primary aspects that increase the spending of businesses in their IT networks. Not to mention the labour of the IT professionals that will handle the installation of this system.
