How to Spot Red Flags in Leased Line Quotes

Leased Line Quote

Not all leased line quotes are created equal. While most UK providers are reputable, there are instances where quotes include misleading terms, hidden charges, or overly optimistic promises. Here’s how to identify red flags in leased line quotes before you commit.

1. Vague or Missing Service Level Agreements (SLAs)

SLAs are critical because they define uptime guarantees, fault resolution timelines, and response times. If your quote includes generic terms like “high reliability” or lacks specific uptime targets and fix-time guarantees, be cautious.

Red flag examples:

  • No mention of uptime (e.g. 99.9%)
  • No stated repair time (e.g. 4 hours)
  • Support hours not listed

Best practice: Insist on a written SLA document with performance metrics.

2. Unexpected Installation or Setup Fees

Many leased line quotes promote low monthly rates but quietly include:

  • High installation fees (sometimes over £2,000)
  • Excess construction charges (ECCs) if extra cabling is needed
  • Equipment hire or purchase fees

Red flag examples:

  • Installation: “TBD after survey”
  • Router: “Provided at additional cost”

Tip: Ask for a full cost breakdown, including ECCs, in writing.

3. Non-Committal Pricing or “From” Prices

Quotes that say “from £249/month” often indicate pricing is based on the best-case scenario. The final price may rise significantly after the site survey.

Red flag phrases:

  • “Estimated pricing only”
  • “Subject to change”
  • “Indicative only, excludes site visit”

Solution: Confirm if the price is fixed or conditional upon survey.

4. Missing Contract Length and Terms

A proper quote should clearly state:

  • Contract length (12, 24, 36 months)
  • Notice period
  • Early termination fees

Red flags include:

  • No contract duration listed
  • Ambiguous clauses around price increases

Make sure the quote includes a clear commercial contract or draft agreement.

5. No Mention of Contention Ratio or Dedicated Bandwidth

Leased lines are supposed to be uncontended—meaning bandwidth is not shared. Some quotes sneak in “up to” language or shared service models.

Red flag wording:

  • “Up to 1 Gbps”
  • “Shared fibre”

Ask directly: Is this a 1:1 dedicated connection? Demand confirmation.

6. No Site Survey Details

Most accurate quotes depend on a physical or desktop site survey. If the quote skips this, surprises are likely later on.

What to ask:

  • Will a site survey be conducted before finalising costs?
  • Are there any known factors that could lead to ECCs?

7. Lack of Customer Support Details

Premium leased line services should include 24/7 UK-based support. If your quote doesn’t mention this or only offers business-hours support, that’s a risk.

Key details to check:

  • Is support available 24/7?
  • UK-based or outsourced?
  • Is a dedicated account manager included?

Sample Red Flag in Leased Line Quote Breakdown

Feature Provider A (Red Flag) Provider B (Transparent)
SLA Not included 99.99% uptime, 4-hr fix
Install Fee “TBD after survey” £0 (waived)
Monthly Cost “From £249” £320
Support Email-only 24/7 UK-based phone support
Contract Term Not listed 36 months

Final Checklist: Spotting a Bad Quote

Use this quick checklist to check any red flags in leased line quote before signing:

Checkpoint What to Look For Why It Matters
✅ SLA Clarity Clearly defined uptime (e.g. 99.99%) and repair times (e.g. 4 hours) Ensures performance accountability
✅ Transparent Pricing Breakdown of install, monthly, and any ECC fees Avoids surprise costs after survey
✅ Fixed or Conditional Pricing Clear whether pricing is subject to change post-survey Helps in financial planning
✅ Dedicated Line Guarantee 1:1 uncontended connection Guarantees consistent performance
✅ Site Survey Plan Confirmation of survey and how findings affect the final quote Avoids future disputes or delays
✅ Support Details 24/7 UK-based customer support outlined in the quote Critical for resolving downtime fast
✅ Contract Terms Clear length, cancellation policy, and any early termination fees Prevents getting locked into a bad deal

If any of these are missing or vague in your quote, consider it a red flag and push the provider for full clarification.

Protect Your Business with Transparent Quotes

Don’t let unclear terms cost your business thousands over the contract term. Scrutinise each section of your leased line quote and ask providers to clarify anything that isn’t fully transparent.
